Postural Restoration Institute® techniques (PRI)
The human body is not symmetrical. The neurological, respiratory, circulatory, muscular and vision systems are not the same on the left side of the body as they are on the right, and vice versa. They have different responsibilities, function, position and demands on them. This system asymmetry is a good thing and an amazing design. The human body is balanced through the integration of system imbalances. The torso, for example, is balanced with a liver on the right and a heart on the left. Extremity dominance is balanced through reciprocal function; i.e. left arm moves with right leg and vice versa. When these normal imbalances are not regulated by reciprocal function during walking, breathing or turning, a strong pattern emerges creating structural weaknesses, instabilities, and musculo-skeletal pain syndromes. Balancing muscle activity around the sacrum (pelvis), the sternum (thorax) and the sphenoid (middle of the head) through a PRI approach of specific exercise programs best positions multiple systems of the human body for appropriate integrated asymmetrical function. Craniosacral Therapy (CST)
CranioSacral Therapy was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger following extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics. CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Restrictions in the craniosacral system are released using a soft touch, which has been shown to improve the functioning of the central nervous system, as well as many other systems of the body, such as digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory, circulatory, and more. CST has also been shown to help with the physical components related to such somatic conditions as Post Traumatic Stress, depression and anxiety. (Upledger Institute International)
Visceral Manipulation (VM) and Neural Manipulation (NM)
Visceral Manipulation, developed by French Osteopath and Physical Therapist Jean-Pierre Barral, is a gentle manual therapy that aids the body's ability to release restrictions and unhealthy compensations that cause pain and dysfunction. "Viscera" relates to the internal organs of the body, such as the liver, kidneys and intestines. Visceral Manipulation does not focus solely on the site of pain or dysfunction, but evaluates the entire body to find the source of the problem. VM therapists feel for altered or decreased motion within the viscera, as well as restrictive patterns throughout the body and then apply VM techniques. VM therapy re-establishes the body's ability to adapt and restore itself to health. (The Barral Institute)
Neural Manipulation, developed by French Osteopaths Jean-Pierre Barral and Alain Croibier, is a gentle, precise manual therapy that facilitates free movement of nerves in relation to their surrounding tissues, including adjacent muscles, fascia, narrow passages in the aponeurosis, organs and bones. NM therapists find the most significant area of reduced mobility and perform a mobilization on the nerve fixation to free the nerve and help restore the proper signaling to the compromised structures it innervates. This in turn improves the function of those structures, such as muscle, organ, or fascia. (The Barral Institute)
Treatment Model:
In-person treatments are primarily with Nikki Smith, PTA. A Physical Therapist will participate - either in person or via a HIPPA compliant telehealth platform - in the Initial Evaluation and in reassessment visits at least every 30 days.
Location:
Most clients are seen at our Southwest Portland location. However, under certain circumstances we may be able to treat a client in their home or in the community, depending on the specific client condition, need and location.
Pricing:
60 minute visits (including the Initial Evaluation) - $125/visit
90 minute visits (when available) - $175/visit
Home/community based visits - additional fee of $25/visit
Payments are due at the time of service and can be paid with cash, check or Zelle
We do not take medical insurance, but are happy to provide a superbill so you can submit a claim to your insurance company on your own.
